IPC and CEMESO Convene Strategic Media Dialogue in Lagos with EU’s Support

The International Press Centre (IPC) and the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), with the support of the European Union under the Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN II) programme, have convened a high-level strategic engagement with leading media professionals in Lagos on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, as part of the ongoing efforts to promote ethical and professional standards in the coverage of Nigeria’s electoral and democratic landscape.

In his opening address, CEMESO Executive Director Dr. Akin Akingbulu highlighted the media’s responsibility in defending democratic values, particularly in the face of rising disinformation. He outlined key milestones achieved under Component 4 of the EU-SDGN II programme, driven by IPC and CEMESO, including the advancement of media professionalism, the fight against disinformation, enhanced civic and voter education, support for regulatory improvements, and the promotion of inclusive media narratives. Dr. Akingbulu stressed that the continued success of these efforts depends on three critical factors: stakeholder commitment, capacity development, and the creation of a supportive environment for ethical media practice. While recognising the commitment and competencies already evident within the sector, he urged media leaders to strengthen internal systems that foster professionalism and accountability.

Meanwhile, IPC Executive Director Mr. Lanre Arogundade emphasised the essential role of the media in fostering informed electoral participation. He noted the media’s ability to reach diverse audiences with relevant, factual content that empowers citizens to make sound democratic choices. Mr. Arogundade stressed that, as media gatekeepers and operational leaders, they have a crucial role in shaping narratives and setting standards that ensure impactful reporting of electoral processes and elections.

Also speaking at the event, the Programme Manager, CEMESO, Mr Timothy Bamidele, explained that the activity sought to foster collaboration among media executives and secure commitments towards inclusive, fair, balanced and accountable electoral reporting. Stating that this is just one part of a broader intervention which will still include media house visits and virtual follow-ups — all aimed at strengthening media institutions in Nigeria.

The engagement featured plenary and breakout sessions, moderated by the Executive Director of Broadcasters Organisation of Nigeria (BON), Dr Yemisi Bamgbose for broadcasters while Director of The Journalism Clinic, Mr Taiwo Obe moderated for the Print and Online professionals during which participants explored actionable strategies to improve media standards.

Media leaders also called for deeper collaboration between media institutions and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to reinforce the media’s democratic role. There was a shared consensus on the importance of editorial policies that reflect professional integrity and regulatory compliance.

The event brought together a diverse range of media leaders across print, broadcast, and online platforms.
