CEMESO invites journalists, researchers, media regulators, and the general public to download our latest publication — Broadcast Media Coverage of Elections-Related Politics in Nigeria, a comprehensive study examining how Nigerian radio and television stations reported on election-related politics between July 2023 and June 2024.
The report reveals that news reports dominated election-related content (67.8%), followed by discussion programmes (21.7%) and interviews (10.5%). Encouragingly, 63% of the broadcasts maintained balance, while only 0.2% contained elements of extreme or provocative language. The study also highlights key areas of coverage such as election petitions, election administration, campaign activities, and intra-party conflicts.
However, issues concerning women (1.04%), youth (0.94%), and persons with disabilities (0.34%) received minimal attention — signaling a need for more inclusive political coverage. In terms of visibility, INEC and security agencies were the most featured institutions, while the APC, PDP, and Labour Party dominated political coverage.
