The MEiN’s analysis for May 2024 highlights a troubling trend of assaults on the media, with security agencies responsible for 37.5% of these attacks. The media was the sole target in all relevant reports, making up 62.5% of the themes. Discussions on regulation covered 25% of the focus areas, emphasizing the need for authorities to avoid misusing existing laws to intimidate journalists or creating new regulations that could harm press freedom. Additionally, 12.5% of the narratives focused on judicial actions. This analysis reveals a contradiction in Nigeria’s democratic framework: despite its commitment to democracy, journalists face significant intimidation and suppression.
