In 2018, the Institute for Media and Society (IMS) established a Media Monitoring activity as part of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Project, specifically under the Support to Media component. Recognizing the value of media monitoring as a systematic and scientific tool for generating data, the activity aimed to contribute to enhanced professionalism in the media and improve media coverage of the electoral process in Nigeria, particularly leading up to and following the 2019 general elections.

To facilitate this, Media Monitoring Centers were established in four locations: Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Yola, and Lagos. IMS staff members monitored and analyzed the content of selected radio and television outlets nationwide. Their focus was on examining the quality and diversity of media coverage, paying attention to the actors and institutions involved in the electoral process.

The results of the extensive monitoring work are presented in this publication. Readers will gain insights into the prioritization of media attention, changes in coverage patterns, and areas requiring improvement in the conduct of elections and broader democratic governance in Nigeria. This publication serves as a valuable resource for journalists and other professionals involved in the electoral process in the country.
