The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the management of the ThisDay Newspapers Limited and African Independent Television (AIT) to pay backlog of salaries owed journalists and other staff of the companies.

Executive Director of the organisation, Frank Tietie said yesterday in Abuja that the development amount to a violation of the journalists and other media workers’ right to work and be entitled to salaries, contractual entitlements and pensions.

“A number of former staff of This Day Newspapers (formerly Leaders and Company Limited) and AIT have brought to the attention of CASER that they are being owed several months of salary arrears together with entitlements and unremitted pension deductions.

“CASER therefore issue the management of the two companies a seven-day notice that unless the salary arrears together with entitlements and unremitted pension deductions are paid within the period, it shall on behalf of the former workers cause the institution of various legal proceedings against the organisations including but not limited to the liquidation of the company to ensure that the salary arrears, entitlements and pension deductions are paid,” Tietie said.
